The new goal set by her surgeon was 115°. How close is Olivia today?

Flexion = 112°

After her biking and going through her exercise program, her post-activity range measured out to 117°. Bow-chicka-wow-wow! That goes to show that you really get things loosening up and blood circulating with some exercise. Now dubbed the lunge pro (aka “the LP”), Olivia is rocking out her squats, lunges, and monster walks to restore that gorgeous pre-injury beach bod!

Oh yeah. You read that title right. Now, it’s not the first time something like this has happened. Let’s all take a moment to remember Bill Gramatica, a field goal kicker that is regrettably famous for injuring his knee after celebrating a successful field goal attempt. Injuries from around the NFL

The nerd inside of me thinks about all of the injuries and hours spent at rehab as I sit on my couch watching the Super Bowl rematch on this glorious Sunday (go Seahawks!). Even the commentators of this morning’s game between the Redskins and Eagles recognized that the medical staff for both teams will have their work cut out for them. Combined, he Redskins and Eagles had 10 players go down with injury, of which 4 returned. And that doesn’t include Eagles’ quarterback, Nick Foles (the guy who gets mashed below), who was clearly in distress after getting hit a few times.

Follow-up Friday #5!

Another week of hard work and physio later, Olivia’s knee now measures:

Flexion = 101°

Can I get a “what what” for this lady! Olivia is now just a little bit closer to that ultimate goal of full flexion. I have to give her credit for not complaining when we make an exercise a bit tougher. Bike, exercise, sweat, repeat!

Let’s get back to Brad!

Now that we have determined that Brad is dealing with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), we can start creating a treatment plan. It’s important for us, as physiotherapists, to explain what the different treatment approaches are and why they are effective. There are many tools in a physio’s toolbox that can be used to “fix” a problem. We don’t always use all our tools because certain methods have a greater impact than others depending on the type of injury we are dealing with.

Can I get a drum roll for Olivia’s most recent range of motion update?!

Flexion = 94°

Slow and steady wins the race! It’s pretty impressive to see these consistent improvements in Olivia’s range of motion. Her next visit with her orthopedic surgeon isn’t for another couple weeks but she’s already surpassed the goals that were set for her! Full range is 140° so we’ve “got a little bit longer” but this knee is going to be golden!

Boomshakalaka! As these numbers improve, so does Olivia’s strength and, more importantly, function! She no longer needs to use her crutch to help her walk. She’s able to tackle tougher exercises. Guys, she will be doing dunks and shattering backboards in no time!

He faced a tumultuous season in 2013 but has come back with a vengeance this year. Objective physical therapy assessment

Alright, where were we? Ah yes, I was chatting to handsome Brad about his knee injury and now it’s time to test it out! We are going into the objective assessment!

The tests that I use to determine a diagnosis were all created many years ago by physio legends. They are designed so that any physio can use them on a particular patient and come to the same conclusion. For example, if I perform the McMurray test (which assesses meniscus injuries) on Brad and it turns out positive, my coworker should get the same result using the same test. Folks, this is known as having high inter-rater reliability. And that’s a good thing! It should not matter who examined Brad – whether it is myself, my coworker, or another physio in another country – we should all come to the same diagnosis.

I spent my weekend doing some wild things like:

  1. Riding my mountain bike.
  2. Going grocery shopping.
  3. Watching Arsenal scrape out a draw against Everton.
  4. Eating ice cream.
  5. And most importantly, reading this awesome book!

Becoming a Supple Leopard by Dr. Kelly Starrett (on Twitter as @mobilitywod) is about human movement and ways to restore proper function to prevent injury. It’s a pity that I am an embarrassingly slow reader. So I apologize that it might take me a while to share all the golden nuggets that Kelly has to offer. But trust me, I am writing down everything of merit (in “Notes” on my iPhone, oh how technology has changed me) to share with you!
