Messi’s messy medial collateral ligament (MCL) tear

It’s time to play the game of 2 truths and 1 lie! Can you pick out which of these statements about me is false?

  1. I scored 32 points in a junior high basketball game but now cannot do a lay-up to save my life.
  2. I made an appearance on the Ellen Show.
  3. I hate sports and I would much rather watch the Real Housewives of Atlanta.

If you chose statement 3, you are correct! My basketball career peaked when I was going through puberty and I love (stalking) Ellen Degeneres.

As I sit in the Edmonton International Airport on the busiest day of the year, I thought this might be a good time to give all of you Olivia groupies the most recent update on our most famous patient! We had a couple weeks of 137o. Will Santa bring her the gift of being closer to full range of motion this week?

Thousands of measurements and exercise progressions later, Olivia was at a stunning 137o! Let’s see where this week takes her…

Flexion = 137°

No, that is not a typo! Hey, don’t sweat it, Olivia! At this stage in the game, maintenance is just as good as improvement. Plus at 98% of her range of motion (yes, I just did that math in my head… 137 of 140), all basic daily functions and recreational activities are doable. But to be sure, we’ll keep trying to reestablish those last 3 degrees. Why? Because I want her to be able to twerk like a champ! And everyone knows that takes the full 140o!

Another graft bites the dust: Which tendon will this unlucky bird use to repair his ACL injury?

Thirteen games have come and gone. How will this week compare to the 43 injuries that occurred in week 9? Week 10 by the numbers:

40 = Number of players who missed game time due to injury.

4 = Number of players placed on season-ending IR.

Nate Berkus and Ty Pennington to pay Oilers Taylor Hall a visit during MCL rehab

I know you are pretty clever (and obviously good looking) so you already know that I am a huge NFL fan. But I’m still a true Canadian at heart and that means that I eat poutine, know how to skate, hold doors open for strangers, choose Timmy’s over Starbucks, and – of course – watch hockey! Growing up in Edmonton, I was branded an Oilers fan since my days in the womb. Yes, I am highly aware that they are somewhat painful to cheer for but I’m not jumping off the bandwagon any time soon!

The new goal set by her surgeon was 115°. How close is Olivia today?

Flexion = 112°

After her biking and going through her exercise program, her post-activity range measured out to 117°. Bow-chicka-wow-wow! That goes to show that you really get things loosening up and blood circulating with some exercise. Now dubbed the lunge pro (aka “the LP”), Olivia is rocking out her squats, lunges, and monster walks to restore that gorgeous pre-injury beach bod!

NFL linebacker tears ACL after celebrating sack

Oh yeah. You read that title right. Now, it’s not the first time something like this has happened. Let’s all take a moment to remember Bill Gramatica, a field goal kicker that is regrettably famous for injuring his knee after celebrating a successful field goal attempt. Sorry for bringing this up again, Bill!

Another week of hard work and physio later, Olivia’s knee now measures:

Flexion = 101°

Can I get a “what what” for this lady! Olivia is now just a little bit closer to that ultimate goal of full flexion. I have to give her credit for not complaining when we make an exercise a bit tougher. Bike, exercise, sweat, repeat!

Physical therapy treatment: Exercise!

celebrity-gifs-brad-pitt-workout

Let’s get back to Brad!

Now that we have determined that Brad is dealing with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), we can start creating a treatment plan. It’s important for us, as physiotherapists, to explain what the different treatment approaches are and why they are effective. There are many tools in a physio’s toolbox that can be used to “fix” a problem. We don’t always use all our tools because certain methods have a greater impact than others depending on the type of injury we are dealing with.

Can I get a drum roll for Olivia’s most recent range of motion update?!

Flexion = 94°

Slow and steady wins the race! It’s pretty impressive to see these consistent improvements in Olivia’s range of motion. Her next visit with her orthopedic surgeon isn’t for another couple weeks but she’s already surpassed the goals that were set for her! Full range is 140° so we’ve “got a little bit longer” but this knee is going to be golden!

This is a great picture. I say that because I didn’t screw up this week and measure Olivia’s knee backwards, hah! As you can see, her latest measurement is…

Flexion = 85°

Boomshakalaka! As these numbers improve, so does Olivia’s strength and, more importantly, function! She no longer needs to use her crutch to help her walk. She’s able to tackle tougher exercises. Guys, she will be doing dunks and shattering backboards in no time!

Follow-up Friday #2

Guys, I took a picture of Olivia’s knee today but just realized that I had the goniometer backwards. My bad, I thought it was “backwards-inside-out-reverse” day! Although I admit my fault, I will not be posting my terribly unprofessional photo because I’m a little type A haha. Apologies! But I can tell you that her knee is at…
