Aaand we’re into November! Remember when we started this segment and it was sunny and hot outside? Now we’re getting forecasts of snow! As time has flown by, Olivia is continuing to impress. Her latest measurement is…

Eagles’ Nick Foles won’t be flapping his wings any time soon

With six teams on their bye week, we were treated to only thirteen games this week. Keep that in mind while we look at week 9 by the numbers:

43 = Number of players who missed game time due to injury.

4 = Number of players placed on season-ending IR.

Nate Berkus and Ty Pennington to pay Oilers Taylor Hall a visit during MCL rehab

I know you are pretty clever (and obviously good looking) so you already know that I am a huge NFL fan. But I’m still a true Canadian at heart and that means that I eat poutine, know how to skate, hold doors open for strangers, choose Timmy’s over Starbucks, and – of course – watch hockey! Growing up in Edmonton, I was branded an Oilers fan since my days in the womb. Yes, I am highly aware that they are somewhat painful to cheer for but I’m not jumping off the bandwagon any time soon!

My new favourite workout partner: The WaterRower

Born and raised in Edmonton, I am no stranger to the long winters Mother Nature so kindly provides us. To be honest, I don’t mind our winters – playing shinny at the ODR with friends and snowboarding in the Rockies are two of my favourite activities. But I’m also aware that it can be freezing cold and really icy which doesn’t allow for many bike rides around my neighbourhood. So in anticipation of winter, I ordered this beauty a month ago in effort to stay fit while the bears hibernate. Those bears will never get me!

Breaking down Tony Romo’s back injury… Star Trek style!

We have officially hit the halfway point of the season! Coming off of a record low number of injuries in week 7, I must have jinxed the NFL because we saw a record high this week. Sorry, guys… Week 8 by the numbers:

You might need your pectoralis major to play in the NFL

Lucky number seven! Week 7 in the NFL did bring NFL players a bit of luck as this week featured the fewest injuries since we started this party! Week 7 by the numbers:

35 = Number of players who missed game time due to injury.

Tips from the Supple Leopard: How to develop great posture using the bracing sequence

I was able to spend some quality time reading Becoming a Supple Leopard by physiotherapist Kelly Starrett while on vacation in Vancouver. One of my favourite things that Kelly discusses is posture! After all, great posture is the foundation to great movement!

Rubbing salt in the wound: Injury reaggravation in the NFL

The injury bug was at it again this week. Cleveland, Green Bay, Miami, New England, San Francisco, Washington, and both New York teams were hit the hardest as they saw three or more of their players fall to injury. Week 6 by the numbers:

The NFL isn’t ancient Greece but it still has Achilles issues

With another NFL week gone, every team’s rehab personnel of physicians, physios, and athletic therapists have a few more injuries to diagnose and treat leading up to the next game. Week 5 by the numbers:

The new goal set by her surgeon was 115°. How close is Olivia today?

Flexion = 112°

After her biking and going through her exercise program, her post-activity range measured out to 117°. Bow-chicka-wow-wow! That goes to show that you really get things loosening up and blood circulating with some exercise. Now dubbed the lunge pro (aka “the LP”), Olivia is rocking out her squats, lunges, and monster walks to restore that gorgeous pre-injury beach bod!

NFL linebacker tears ACL after celebrating sack

Oh yeah. You read that title right. Now, it’s not the first time something like this has happened. Let’s all take a moment to remember Bill Gramatica, a field goal kicker that is regrettably famous for injuring his knee after celebrating a successful field goal attempt. Sorry for bringing this up again, Bill!

Injuries from around the NFL

The nerd inside of me thinks about all of the injuries and hours spent at rehab as I sit on my couch watching the Super Bowl rematch on this glorious Sunday (go Seahawks!). Even the commentators of this morning’s game between the Redskins and Eagles recognized that the medical staff for both teams will have their work cut out for them. Combined, he Redskins and Eagles had 10 players go down with injury, of which 4 returned. And that doesn’t include Eagles’ quarterback, Nick Foles (the guy who gets mashed below), who was clearly in distress after getting hit a few times.

Another week of hard work and physio later, Olivia’s knee now measures:

Flexion = 101°

Can I get a “what what” for this lady! Olivia is now just a little bit closer to that ultimate goal of full flexion. I have to give her credit for not complaining when we make an exercise a bit tougher. Bike, exercise, sweat, repeat!

Physical therapy treatment: Exercise!

celebrity-gifs-brad-pitt-workout

Let’s get back to Brad!

Now that we have determined that Brad is dealing with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), we can start creating a treatment plan. It’s important for us, as physiotherapists, to explain what the different treatment approaches are and why they are effective. There are many tools in a physio’s toolbox that can be used to “fix” a problem. We don’t always use all our tools because certain methods have a greater impact than others depending on the type of injury we are dealing with.

Can I get a drum roll for Olivia’s most recent range of motion update?!

Flexion = 94°

Slow and steady wins the race! It’s pretty impressive to see these consistent improvements in Olivia’s range of motion. Her next visit with her orthopedic surgeon isn’t for another couple weeks but she’s already surpassed the goals that were set for her! Full range is 140° so we’ve “got a little bit longer” but this knee is going to be golden!

Follow up Friday #3!

This is a great picture. I say that because I didn’t screw up this week and measure Olivia’s knee backwards, hah! As you can see, her latest measurement is…

Flexion = 85°

Boomshakalaka! As these numbers improve, so does Olivia’s strength and, more importantly, function! She no longer needs to use her crutch to help her walk. She’s able to tackle tougher exercises. Guys, she will be doing dunks and shattering backboards in no time!
